Mona Sloane, Ph.D. is a sociologist working on design and inequality, specifically in the context of AI design and policy. She is a Senior Research Scientist at the NYU Center for Responsible AI, an Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, a Fellow with NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge (IPK) and The GovLab, and the Director of the *This Is Not A Drill* program on technology, inequality and the climate emergency at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is principal investigator on multiple research projects on AI and society, and holds an affiliation with the Tübingen AI Center at the University of Tübingen in Germany. Mona also is the convenor of the IPK Co-Opting AI series at NYU and serves as editor of the technology section at Public Books. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science.


MATT STATLER, Co-Principal Investigator

Matt Statler is the Richman Family Director of Business Ethics and Social Impact Programming and a Clinical Professor of Business and Society at NYU Stern School of Business.  Previously, Matt served NYU's Center for Catastrophe Preparedness and Response as the Director of Research and as Associate Director of the International Center for Enterprise Preparedness.  He worked as the Director of Research at the Imagination Lab Foundation in Lausanne, Switzerland following several years as a management consultant in New York City.  His research on ethics, leadership and strategy has been published in dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.  He completed a PhD in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University, spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Heidelberg, and obtained Bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and Philosophy from the University of Missouri.

Sarah Welsh is a writer, researcher, program manager, and communications specialist. She has a PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied digital media ethics and taught rhetoric and writing. As the Producer for A BETTER TECH, she built and managed marketing and strategy (LinkedIn, Twitter, Newsletter, most graphic design), this website you are reading (design, coding, copy), and production for the two-day event. She lives in Austin, Texas and writes sometimes on Medium.

Rebekah is a leader in Responsible Tech and Public Interest Technology careers, talent, and hiring trends. She is the creator of the Responsible Tech Job Board, the Program Director at All Tech is Human. As Assistant Producer of A BETTER TECH, she managed the career fair and senior talent network and curates the job board and career profile gallery. Rebekah is also the Co-Chair of the IEEE Global AI Ethics Initiative Editing Committee and a member of the Arts Committee. Previously, Rebekah worked as the Project Manager for NYC law firm Eisenberg & Baum, LLP's AI Fairness and Data Privacy Practice Group, where she examined technology's impact on society, organizing and promoting virtual events to build public awareness around algorithmic discrimination and data privacy issues in New York City and beyond.


MARA VAN LOGGERENBERG, Marketing + Book Fair

Mara is the Associate Director for Social Impact Programming at NYU Stern, where she develops programs and partnerships that blend business with social impact and sustainability for Stern's Undergraduate College -- including opportunities in public interest technology. Prior to joining NYU, Mara served as Deputy Director for Global Policy & UN Relations at the UN Foundation, where she reported on and advised partners on the diplomatic negotiations of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and on financing for sustainable development. Mara has previously worked for the OECD in Paris, France; the WFM-Institute for Global Policy; and the Initiative for Policy Dialogue at Columbia University in New York City. Mara graduated from Duke University with magna cum laude honors; studied International Relations & Diplomacy at the American Graduate School in Paris, France; and is pursuing her Executive Master’s degree in Public Affairs at the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

As a seasoned administrator with 19 years of professional experience at NYU, Melissa has held several administrative leadership roles in the Faculty of Arts and Science, as Department Administrator for Steinhardt's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, and most recently as Chief of Staff to the Dean at Steinhardt. Melissa earned an MA in Higher Education Administration from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and a BA degree in Liberal Arts from The New School in NYC.

Nazelie is the Executive Assistant at Data & Society, a research institute investigating the social implications of technology. She is also the Outreach Coordinator for A BETTER TECH, a public interest technology convention and career fair hosted by NYU. In the past, she has worked at Maine Writer's and Publishers Alliance, and served as the Editor-in-Chief of Forum, an undergraduate, student-run journal and cultural review. Nazelie is primarily interested in epistemic injustice as a framework to evaluate how communities create and preserve information and build new archival worlds. She received a B.A. in Humanities from Villanova University.

Cat is an MPA-PNP candidate at NYU's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, where she focuses on the intersection of urban and
technology policy. Previously, she worked as a Civic Technology and Equity Analyst for CTC Technology & Energy, where she supported state and local government clients with broadband planning and technology equity strategy. Cat also served as Senior Program Manager at Next Century Cities, where she worked with local government leaders to bring fast, affordable, reliable broadband to their constituents, and advocated in Washington to support digital inclusion policy and legislation. Cat received a B.A. in Media Studies from the University of Virginia in 2017.
